Our Journey Begins At Bodo Village

Basorun Adekanmbi Somoye was born at Bodo Village, Iporo Homestead, known as Orile-Iporo. His Father was Chief Jejusimi. His mother was Moloko, a princess from Orile–Oko, in the present Remo local Government Area. He was a prince, a warrior, and fondly remembered for his boldness, astuteness, leadership and sacrifices for the Egbaland.

They all reigned as Alake at the homestead except Jejusimi, who reigned as Alaporo of Iporo, because of a serious commotion at the homestead due to the introduction of Jibodu to the Alake dynasty.

Adekanbi Somoye was a direct male descendant of Ajalake, most of his progenitors had one male child among their children. Lukoye had one male child, Jejusimi who begat Somoye. The other children of Lukoye are females, these include Efunkelu the mother of Soboyejo, Adesomi the mother of Matiku who begat Okukenu, and Okukenu begat Gbadebo; Saade begat Jibodu; Labode begat Moninuola; and Igbosu begat Ogunfayo.

Background

Basorun Somoye was a war General and was also twice a regent to the Ake crown. He held court at his Iporo residence which was known as his “Palace” in his days. The Palace at Iporo, located at the foot of the famous Olumo Rock, is one of the few authentic historical sites left in Egbaland today.

However, most residents of Abeokuta and visitors to Olumo Rock are oblivious of its existence, its location and the historical significance of the Basorun Somoye compound. Relics of Egba wars and other artifacts of that period are still on the property. Basorun Somoye was also buried there.

It’s time for the family to promote the existence of the Basorun Somoye Palace. Tourists to the Olumo Rock should be visiting regularly. Additionally the new ultra modern Adire Plaza and the Itoku Market are less than a mile away. Together, both generate thousands of visitors and shoppers daily. Recently constructed six-lane tarred road links the Olumo Rock attraction, the Basorun Compound, the Adire Plaza and the Itoku Market. The area is designated by the state government as “prime area”.

The Project

The Somoye Family has decided to update and rebuild the Basorun Palace with a view to preserve its historical significance and turn it into a tourist attraction as well as avail it to promote the history of the Egbas.
The rebuilt Palace will include a library, community meeting rooms, event hall, restaurant and bar, parking lot, chalets for short accommodation for family and visitors to Abeokuta, a cenotaph built over the grave of Basorun Somoye and perimeter fencing over the entire 1 acre property.
